How to choose a graphics card in 2026

Raster vs ray tracing vs upscaling

Raw rasterization (timespy_score) is the floor — what every game runs on without RT enabled. Ray tracing performance separates NVIDIA's RT cores from AMD's hybrid implementation. Upscaling (DLSS 4, FSR 4, XeSS 2) is now the dominant performance lever — most 4K-60 results assume upscaling on. Look at all three numbers, not one.

VRAM: 12 GB is the new floor

8 GB VRAM is hitting the wall in 2025–26 titles at 1440p with RT on. 12 GB is the comfortable minimum for 1440p. 16 GB is the 4K floor. 24–32 GB matters for AI workloads and 4K texture mods. Do not buy a sub-12 GB card in 2026 unless your target is 1080p esports.

TDP and PSU headroom

Chipset and bus width

GPU chipset (gpu_chipset) determines the tier; memory bus width (memory_bus_bit) determines how the chip scales at high resolution. A narrow bus + GDDR7 can match a wider bus + GDDR6X, but high-resolution texture-heavy workloads still favor wider buses.

Length, slot size, cooling

A 320mm+ triple-slot card (length_mm) does not fit every mid-tower case. Measure before you order. Open-air coolers exhaust into the case; blower-style coolers exhaust out the back and are quieter at high TDP but louder at idle.
