How to choose a smartphone in 2026
Picking a smartphone in 2026 is less about which OS you prefer and more about which spec trade-offs you can live with. The Mars Score weights performance (25%), battery (20%), display (18%) and cameras (18%) most heavily, with design, connectivity, and OS commitments rounding out the formula. That ordering reflects what real-world reviews and consumer complaints have consistently flagged as the things that age a phone poorly.
Battery is suddenly the decisive spec
Silicon-carbon anodes cracked the long-running capacity–thickness–weight triangle. Chinese flagships are now shipping 7,000–7,500 mAh in sub-220g bodies; Apple is still on roughly half that. If you do not want to charge daily, look first at the biggest-battery preset and our field report on silicon-carbon.
Performance is converging — except in gaming
Top-tier chipsets (Snapdragon 8 Elite gen 4, Apple A19 Pro, Dimensity 9500) cluster within ~15% of each other on synthetic benchmarks. Where they diverge is sustained gaming performance and AI workloads. If you spend hours in Genshin Impact or run on-device LLMs, look at our Mars Labs coverage of thermal throttling tests before deciding.
Cameras: megapixels are not the story
A 200 MP main sensor (Galaxy S26 Ultra) and a 48 MP main sensor (iPhone 17) are both excellent. The differentiator at the top end is now telephoto: Apple's 5× optical, Samsung's variable-aperture 100×-digital, and Google's Tensor-powered super-res zoom each handle the same scene differently. Read our hands-on coverage before buying for photography.
Software longevity is the new battery anxiety
Samsung and Google both ship 7-year OS commitments on flagship Galaxy and Pixel. Apple's track record is 6+. OnePlus offers 5 on the OnePlus 15. A phone that loses security updates becomes effectively unusable for many buyers within 3 years; treat the update window as a hardware spec.
Foldables: niche but no longer experimental
Book-style and clamshell foldables are mature enough that we now compare them on equal footing in our foldable preset. Crease visibility, hinge durability, and software optimization vary widely. If you want the form factor, pick by ecosystem fit first, hinge spec second.
