6 GHz band
Newly opened Wi-Fi spectrum (Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7), offering 1,200 MHz of clean airspace. Higher throughput and lower interference than 2.4 / 5 GHz, with shorter range.
The FCC and equivalent regulators opened 5.925–7.125 GHz to unlicensed Wi-Fi use in 2020. It's the biggest single addition to consumer wireless spectrum in two decades.
Why it's faster
- 7 non-overlapping 160 MHz channels (vs 2 on 5 GHz).
- No legacy device congestion — only Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 use it.
- Cleaner spectrum, fewer retransmits.
Why it's shorter range
Higher-frequency RF attenuates more quickly through walls and floors. Real-world range is roughly 70–80% of 5 GHz at the same transmit power.
Where it matters
Apartments and dense neighborhoods benefit most — 2.4 and 5 GHz are saturated, 6 GHz remains nearly empty for now. Single-family suburban homes see less day-to-day improvement.
In comparisons
A Wi-Fi 7 laptop without 6 GHz support (some early budget SKUs) loses much of the upgrade's value.
