Every purifier in this top ten has a HEPA 13 filter and a carbon filter. Those are not differentiators any more, and a machine without them should not be on your list at all.
The two numbers that matter are CADR — how much clean air it actually delivers per hour — and minimum noise, because a purifier you turn off at night is not purifying anything. Coverage area is the third number on the box and it is the least trustworthy: manufacturers compute it from CADR using different assumptions about ceiling height and air changes.
Every figure below is the live computed Mars Score.
Highest score in the catalog: Blueair 7770i
Mars Score 93.1 at $1,099, the most expensive machine here. 900 m³/h CADR — 28% more than anything else in the catalog — across 100 m², at 22 dB minimum.
That combination is what a score is supposed to find: the most air moved, the most space covered, and tied for the quietest setting. There is no catch other than the price.
Best-known alternative: Dyson Purifier Big+Quiet Formaldehyde
Mars Score 89.3 at $999. Also 100 m² coverage, at 640 m³/h — 29% less air than the Blueair for $100 less — and 24 dB.
Dyson's formaldehyde catalyst is genuine and rare, and it is worth the premium if you have new furniture or new flooring. If you do not, you are paying for a specification you will never use.
Best value at scale: Coway Airmega 400
Mars Score 85.4 at $549. 705 m³/h at 22 dB — more air than the Dyson, at the quietest setting in this top ten, for half its price. Rated for 60 m² rather than 100.
Who should buy it: anyone with a large living room who does not need the Blueair's whole-floor coverage.
Best under $300: Levoit Core 600S
Mars Score 83.9 at $299. 680 m³/h across 60 m² at 24 dB — within 4% of the Coway's airflow for $250 less.
This is the value inflection point of the category, and the machine we would put in most homes.
The specialist: IQAir HealthPro Plus
Mars Score 83.6 at $999. 470 m³/h — the lowest airflow in the top five — with no air-quality sensor and no app, which is why it ranks below machines costing a third as much.
What it has instead is medical-grade filtration and a sealed housing that does not leak unfiltered air around the filter, which is the failure mode cheap purifiers share and nobody publishes. Allergy and asthma specialists recommend it for that reason. Our model rates airflow and features; this machine is bought for neither.
The mid-field
Philips 3000i (78.1, $449) moves 520 m³/h but at 30 dB minimum — audibly louder than the machines above it. Winix C909 (77.7, $379) does 500 m³/h at 27 dB over 50 m². Blueair Blue Pure 311i+ Max (77.4, $299) matches that airflow at 23 dB but is rated for only 35 m².
Xiaomi Mi Smart Air Purifier 4 Pro (76.7, $299) is the cautionary one: the same 500 m³/h and 60 m² as machines above it, at 32 dB — the loudest minimum on this page. At night that is the difference between background and noticeable.
Cheapest worth buying: Levoit Vital 200S
Mars Score 75.2 at $199. 380 m³/h over 35 m² at 23 dB — the least air here, quietly, for the least money. For a bedroom, which is where most people actually need one, that is the right specification.
How to choose, in four questions
- CADR first, coverage second. Airflow is measured to a standard; coverage is calculated with assumptions.
- Minimum noise decides whether it runs at night. 22 dB to 32 dB on this page, and the top of that range is a fan you hear.
- Filter cost over three years is often more than the machine. Check it before buying — no specification on this page captures it.
- HEPA 13 and carbon are standard. Anything cheaper that omits them is not a purifier, it is a fan.
