Every watch here has multiband GPS, an altimeter, heart rate and pulse oximetry. The category has converged on features, and what separates these ten is battery life — which ranges from 30 to 320 hours in GPS mode, a factor of more than ten — and how much watch you are prepared to wear.
Every figure below is the live computed Mars Score.
Highest score in the catalog: Garmin Enduro 3
Mars Score 82.6 at $899. 320 hours of GPS tracking — nearly three times the next-longest on this page — 36 days in smartwatch mode, solar charging, and 63 g in a 51 mm case.
Fifty-one millimetres is enormous, and Garmin got the weight down with a nylon case rather than metal. This is a watch built for multi-day ultramarathons and expeditions, and for that it has no competition here.
Longest daily battery: Suunto Vertical Titanium Solar
Mars Score 80.0 at $839. 60 days in smartwatch mode — the longest on this page — 85 GPS hours, solar, titanium, 74 g at 49 mm.
Two months between charges is a different relationship with a watch than two weeks.
Best expedition value: Coros VERTIX 2S
Mars Score 76.5 at $699. 118 GPS hours, 42 days, solar, 10 ATM — and 84 g, the heaviest watch here in a 50.3 mm case.
The sensible size: Coros Apex 2 Pro
Mars Score 74.4 at $499. 46.1 mm and 66 g — the smallest case in the top five — with 75 GPS hours and 30 days, without solar.
Who should buy it: people with normal wrists who do normal-length races.
The flagship in fifth: Garmin Fenix 8 Solar (47mm)
Mars Score 73.5 at $1,199, the most expensive watch here.
It is the only watch in this top ten besides the epix Pro with ECG, it has solar and multiband GPS, and its 104 GPS hours and 28 days are respectable rather than remarkable. The Enduro 3 costs $300 less and tracks for three times as long; the Fenix's argument is mapping, build and breadth of features, much of which our model does not record.
Best value on this page: Coros PACE 3
Mars Score 71.4 at $229 — the cheapest watch here by $270, tied in score with the $999 Suunto Ocean.
39 g and 42 mm, multiband GPS, 38 GPS hours, 17 days. It is 5 ATM rather than 10, has no solar and no ECG. For running — including marathons — it does the job of watches costing four times as much, and the weight is genuinely noticeable on a long run.
The diving one: Suunto Ocean
Mars Score 71.4 at $999. 30 ATM water resistance — triple everything else here — because it is a dive computer as well as a sports watch. Its 30 GPS hours and 10 smartwatch days are the shortest on this page, which is what puts a $999 watch level with a $229 one.
If you dive, none of the other nine watches here are relevant. If you do not, this is a lot of money for water resistance you will never test.
The running specialists
Garmin Forerunner 965 (71.3, $649) is 53 g with an AMOLED display, 31 GPS hours and 5 ATM — the road-racing watch.
Garmin epix Pro (Gen 2) (70.9, $999) adds ECG, 82 GPS hours and 10 ATM at 76 g.
Suunto Race (70.6, $549) offers 120 GPS hours — more than the Fenix 8 at half the price — with 12 smartwatch days at 83 g.
How to choose, in four questions
- How long is your longest activity? 30 GPS hours covers a marathon several times over. 320 covers a week in the mountains. Most people need the low end.
- Case size and weight, 42 mm / 39 g to 51 mm / 84 g. This is a watch you sleep in. Try one on.
- Solar is real but slow — it extends battery in genuine outdoor use and does nothing for an office worker.
- ECG only on two of these ten (Fenix 8, epix Pro). If you want heart-health features rather than training features, that is your shortlist.
