How to choose a smart speaker in 2026
Smart speakers split along two axes: voice assistant (Siri, Alexa, Google) and audio quality (background-listening vs serious music). The Mars Score weights audio output, assistant ecosystem, smart-home protocol support (Matter, Thread, Zigbee), and stereo/multi-room pairing.
Assistant lock-in is the biggest decision
HomePod (2nd gen) and HomePod mini work with Siri and Apple Music; Echo Studio and the Echo Dot line work with Alexa and Amazon Music; Nest speakers work with Google Assistant and YouTube Music. Cross-ecosystem support is partial at best. Choose by the ecosystem you already live in.
Matter, Thread, and Zigbee turn speakers into smart-home hubs
Modern flagship smart speakers (HomePod 2, Echo Studio 2, Nest Hub Max) include Matter controllers + Thread border routers. Echo Studio 2 also includes a Zigbee radio for legacy bulbs and sensors. A single speaker doubling as a smart-home hub avoids a separate hub appliance.
Audio output: real music vs voice-and-podcasts
HomePod 2 (60 W array with computational room correction) and Echo Studio 2 (330 W, Dolby Atmos) target real music listening. Mini speakers (HomePod mini, Echo Dot, Nest mini) are voice-and-podcast devices first; do not expect Hi-Fi from a 20 W speaker.
Stereo pairing and multi-room
Two of the same model can pair as a true stereo pair on all three platforms. Multi-room synchronized playback works within an ecosystem but not across; if you want one whole-home audio system, pick one platform.
Privacy controls
Mute switches with physical disconnect (not just software) matter if you care about microphone privacy. Apple and Amazon both ship hardware mute. Read our privacy field report for the current state of always-listening behavior.
Spatial audio and Dolby Atmos
HomePod 2 and Echo Studio 2 both render Dolby Atmos from supported sources. The effect is real on Atmos-mastered music; minimal on stereo content.
How vsMars scores smart speakers
Each score combines audio output power, assistant capability, smart-home protocols, pairing features, and privacy controls per the methodology. See bluetooth speakers for portable alternatives and soundbars for TV-first setups.
