How to choose a tablet in 2026
The Mars Score for tablets weights display + performance (35%), battery (22%), stylus + accessory ecosystem (23%) and connectivity (20%). The tablet question splits clearly: iPad for creative apps, Galaxy Tab / Pixel Tablet for Android-native users, Surface Pro / Galaxy Book for laptop replacement, Fire and budget for media + reading.
iPadOS, Android, Windows, ChromeOS
iPadOS has the deepest pro app catalog (Procreate, Final Cut for iPad, Logic, Affinity full suite) and the strongest stylus integration. Android tablets matured in 2024–25 — Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra and Pixel Tablet rival the iPad on hardware and offer real multi-window. Windows tablets (Surface Pro 11) run desktop apps natively. ChromeOS tablets are the value play for school + web.
Display: OLED vs LCD vs Tandem OLED
The 13" iPad Pro M4's Tandem OLED hits 1,000-nit fullscreen / 1,600-nit HDR with no blooming — currently the reference tablet display. Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra's AMOLED is similar. Standard LCD on cheaper iPads and Galaxy Tab A is fine for media but no comparison for HDR or pro creative work.
Stylus: the differentiator
The Apple Pencil Pro (squeeze, barrel roll, haptic) is the most capable tablet stylus shipping. The S Pen (included with Galaxy Tab S series, no charging) is the daily-driver favorite for note-takers. The Surface Slim Pen 2 (haptic, charges in the keyboard) is excellent for Windows. The stylus often matters more than the SoC for the buyers who use one daily.
Keyboard and laptop-replacement mode
Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro, Book Cover Keyboard for Galaxy Tab, Surface Type Cover — all turn a tablet into a passable laptop. None of them fully replace a laptop for heavy multi-window, terminal, or desktop-only software. Be honest about whether you need the laptop, the tablet, or both.
Cellular and eSIM
5G + eSIM lets a tablet work standalone away from Wi-Fi. Worth it for traveling pros. Not worth it for home + office use.
How vsMars scores tablets
Display and performance weight highest because both define how long a tablet feels current. See the formula on the methodology page, curated picks on best tablets, and deeper testing on Mars Labs.
