Glossary
Bluetooth 5.3 / 5.4
The current generations of Bluetooth, refining the 5.x baseline with lower power, better channel classification, and support for LE Audio. The wireless standard for personal-area devices in 2026.
Bluetooth 5.3 (2021) and 5.4 (2023) are incremental updates to the 5.x line.
5.3 changes
- Connection subrating. Devices can switch between low-power and full-throughput modes faster.
- Periodic advertising enhancement. Tightens timing for sensors and beacons.
- Channel classification enhancement. Better at avoiding congested 2.4 GHz channels.
5.4 changes
- Periodic Advertising with Responses (PAwR). Two-way comms for previously one-way beacons.
- Encrypted advertising. Privacy improvements for trackers.
Practical impact
Real-world Bluetooth 5.3/5.4 vs 5.0 is rarely dramatic on existing use cases — the upgrade is about enabling LE Audio (Auracast, hearing aid streaming) which needs both sides at 5.2+.
