Weather sealing
Gaskets and seals on a camera body and lens that resist dust and light moisture. Not waterproofing — weather-sealed gear survives rain and dust, not submersion.
Weather sealing is a build-quality feature. Rubber gaskets around buttons, dials, lens mounts, and battery doors keep airborne dust and fine water spray out of the body.
What it actually protects against
- Light rain and snow during a shoot.
- Beach sand and trail dust.
- Brief splashes (a wave hitting the lens once).
What it does NOT do
- Submersion. No mirrorless or DSLR body is rated for underwater use without a dedicated housing.
- Hose-down pressure washing.
- Heavy tropical rain over hours without a rain cover.
The lens half of the equation
A weather-sealed body with a non-sealed lens is only as good as the weakest link. Look for a gasket at the lens mount and rubberized rings at the zoom/focus barrels. The body's IP rating (when published) only covers the body itself.
