How to choose an action camera in 2026
Action cameras live or die on three specs: video ceiling, stabilization quality, and how deep they go underwater without a case. The Mars Score weights video (45%), stabilization (30%) and durability (25%) — roughly the order that real-world reviewers cite when one model beats another.
Resolution is not the deciding factor
The GoPro HERO13 Black, DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro and Insta360 Ace Pro 2 all shoot 5.3K or higher. What separates them is sustained frame rate at 4K — max_fps_4k on every spec table — and how long they hold that rate before thermal throttling. We log both in our Mars Labs bench runs.
Stabilization: the spec that ages the footage
Gimbal-class electronic stabilization (HyperSmooth 6, RockSteady 3.0, FlowState) is the single feature that makes 2026 footage look modern. Combined with horizon lock, it eliminates the "drunk shaky cam" look that dated GoPro footage from 2018. If you ride, ski or mountain bike, treat stabilization as a hard requirement, not a nice-to-have.
Waterproof depth and removable lenses
Native waterproofing — without a housing — ranges from 10 m on standard models to 60 m on dive-rated bodies. Removable lens systems (DJI Osmo Action's Wide Lens Mod, Insta360's lens swap) let you tune field of view and replace scratched glass on the trail. Check the water_depth_m and removable_lens columns before buying for diving.
Battery and heat: the silent killer
A 90-minute marketing claim is usually 45 minutes of real 4K60 shooting before thermal shutdown. We run sustained-recording tests in Mars Labs and publish the actual shutdown time. For a clean overview see Buyer's Guides and Field Reports.
How vsMars scores action cameras
Mars Score for action cameras leans on video and stabilization because those are the two specs reviewers consistently cite when picking winners. See our methodology page for full normalization ranges.
