eARC

Enhanced Audio Return Channel, an HDMI feature that sends audio from a TV back to a compatible soundbar or receiver, with support for higher-quality formats than the older ARC connection.

eARC uses one HDMI connection to return audio from the television's built-in apps or attached devices to a soundbar or receiver. It is designed to carry more capable audio formats than standard ARC, but both the TV and audio device must support eARC for the full feature set.

Why port planning matters

The eARC port may be one of a limited number of high-bandwidth HDMI inputs. Before buying, map the console, PC, streaming box, receiver, and soundbar connections you need. A soundbar can simplify the room but may also change where a source should be connected.

Buying guidance

Enable eARC on both ends, use a suitable cable, and confirm the audio format your playback apps and devices actually output. For many systems, a reliable setup and lip-sync behavior matter more than a format label that the content never uses.

Buyer context

How to use eARC in a real comparison

Enhanced Audio Return Channel, an HDMI feature that sends audio from a TV back to a compatible soundbar or receiver, with support for higher-quality formats than the older ARC connection. In practice, this is most useful as one part of a decision rather than a standalone quality badge. Compare it alongside the workload, room, ecosystem, budget, and ownership constraints that apply to you; the strongest published figure is not automatically the best outcome for every buyer.

Avoid the one-number trap

Manufacturers can describe the same capability under different conditions. Compare like-for-like variants, check the unit and test condition where available, and use a head-to-head page to see whether a measurable difference is material for your own use.
