How to choose a monitor in 2026

The Mars Score for monitors weights panel + color (35%), motion (25%), connectivity (20%) and design (20%). The right monitor depends on whether you are buying for color work, competitive gaming, or productivity — and the spec priorities differ for each.

Panel type: IPS, VA, OLED, QD-OLED

IPS is the safe default — accurate color, wide viewing angles, fast enough for most gaming. VA delivers deeper blacks and is common on curved ultrawides. OLED and QD-OLED (LG UltraGear, Samsung Odyssey OLED G8) deliver perfect blacks plus 0.03ms response — the new reference for both creative work and gaming, with the burn-in risk now mitigated by aggressive pixel-shift firmware. Mini-LED IPS bridges the gap with 1,000+ local dimming zones.

Refresh rate vs response time

A 240 Hz monitor with 4ms GtG (response_time_ms) feels worse than a 144 Hz monitor with 1ms because perceived motion clarity is dominated by response time, not refresh. For competitive shooters, target 240 Hz + ≤1ms. For everything else, 144 Hz + ≤4ms is plenty. OLED's 0.03ms is in a separate category.

Color: DCI-P3 and Delta E

For photo/video work, you want 95%+ DCI-P3 coverage (color_gamut_dci_p3_pct) and Delta E < 2 out of the box. Studio-tier monitors (Apple Studio Display, Asus ProArt, BenQ PD3220U) ship with factory calibration reports. Gaming monitors hit P3 coverage but rarely ship calibrated.

Port mix: USB-C PD and KVM

A single USB-C cable carrying display + 90W power delivery + USB-hub data (has_usb_c, has_usb_c_pd_w) replaces three cables to a laptop. Add KVM (has_kvm) and one keyboard/mouse drives both your work laptop and your personal desktop through one monitor. These two specs save more daily friction than any refresh-rate upgrade.

Resolution: 1440p is the new 1080p

1440p at 27" is the productivity sweet spot. 4K at 27" needs scaling but rewards photo/video work. 4K at 32" is the new desktop premium. 5K at 27" (Apple Studio Display, Samsung ViewFinity S9) gives macOS users pixel-perfect retina scaling without compromise. Match resolution to viewing distance, not to "bigger is better."

How vsMars scores monitors

Panel and motion are weighted highest because the panel is the only spec you cannot upgrade later. See the full formula on the methodology page. Curated picks live on best monitors; in-depth reviews on Mars Labs. For OLED-specific creator advice, see our best OLED monitors for creators guide.
