FreeSync
AMD's variable refresh rate technology, built on VESA Adaptive-Sync. Royalty-free, broadly supported on both AMD and (increasingly) NVIDIA hardware.
FreeSync uses the VESA Adaptive-Sync extension to DisplayPort (and later HDMI VRR) to dynamically vary the panel's refresh rate.
Tiers
- FreeSync. Baseline VRR within the panel's range.
- FreeSync Premium. Adds Low Framerate Compensation (LFC) and 120 Hz minimum at 1080p.
- FreeSync Premium Pro. Adds HDR with low latency.
LFC
When framerate drops below the VRR range, LFC multiplies frames (e.g. a 40 fps source shown at 80 Hz) to keep motion smooth. A monitor without LFC will tear or stutter below its minimum refresh.
