Matter
A royalty-free smart-home interoperability standard developed by Apple, Google, Amazon, and the Connectivity Standards Alliance. Lets devices from different ecosystems work together over IP.
Matter (formerly Project CHIP) provides a common application layer for smart-home devices over Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and Thread. A Matter-certified bulb works with Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, and SmartThings without per-ecosystem firmware.
Transport
- Wi-Fi / Ethernet — for power-hungry devices (cameras, hubs, TVs).
- Thread — low-power mesh for sensors, locks, bulbs.
What it doesn't fix
- Onboarding is universal, but device-specific features (camera ML, vacuum mapping) still require the vendor's app.
- Bridge requirement. Many Matter installations need a Matter controller — an Apple TV, HomePod, Echo, or Nest Hub.
In 2026
Most new smart-home accessories ship Matter-compatible. Older Zigbee/Z-Wave installations remain widely supported via bridges.
