How to choose a VR headset in 2026
VR hardware in 2026 is two markets in one: standalone, content-rich mass-market headsets (Meta Quest line) and high-end PC/spatial computing devices (Apple Vision Pro, Valve Index successors, Pimax Crystal). The Mars Score weights resolution per eye, refresh rate, field of view, optics quality, and tracking — with comfort and ecosystem scored separately.
Resolution per eye is the dominant spec
Quest 3 ships 2064×2208 per eye at 120 Hz on LCD; Vision Pro pushes 3660×3200 per eye on micro-OLED at 100 Hz. The visible "screen door" is gone on both; what differs is text legibility, color rendition, and HDR. Micro-OLED wins for film and high-dynamic-range content; LCD wins on price and brightness.
Standalone vs PC-tethered vs spatial
Standalone (Quest 3, Quest 3S) plays a massive catalog without a PC and sells for under $500. PC-tethered (Pimax, Bigscreen Beyond) needs a high-end GPU but unlocks PCVR sim racing and flight sims. Spatial computing (Vision Pro) reframes the device as a productivity surface rather than a gaming peripheral.
Field of view and pancake optics
Pancake lenses replaced Fresnel on most 2024–26 headsets, halving headset depth and improving edge clarity. FOV ranges from 96° (Quest 3S) to 110° (Quest 3) to 130°+ on Pimax. Wider FOV improves immersion but costs resolution density.
Eye and face tracking unlock social and accessibility
Vision Pro's eye tracking is the input method; Quest Pro and PSVR2 use it for foveated rendering. Face tracking matters mainly for VRChat and similar social platforms.
Comfort beats specs over a 2-hour session
Headset weight, weight distribution, and strap quality determine whether you actually use the device. A 515g headset with a balanced halo strap beats a 400g headset with a flimsy elastic band. See our Mars Labs wear-test logs.
How vsMars scores VR headsets
Each score combines panel resolution/refresh, optics, tracking, ergonomics, and ecosystem per the methodology. Cross-reference with game consoles if you are choosing between PSVR2 and a PC headset, and see our Field Reports for long-term ownership notes.
